Acquisitions Editor
(Remote) Well-known university press is seeking a new Acquisitions Editor. This role will identify, evaluate, acquire, and develop book projects for trade, professional, scholarly, and academic audiences across science, education, and related disciplines in alignment with publishing goals. This role will manage a pipeline of projects, collaborate with authors, peer reviewers, and internal publishing teams, and oversee an active backlist while serving as the primary editorial contact for authors. This role will cultivate relationships with university faculty, researchers, subject-matter experts, and prospective authors to identify new publishing opportunities, expand the editorial program, and ensure the continued growth and success of the publishing portfolio through sound editorial judgment and strategic decision-making.
Main Responsibilities Include:
Acquire and develop trade, scholarly, and professional book projects aligned with publishing goals.
Evaluate proposals, market opportunities, and project viability to build a strong acquisitions pipeline.
Build relationships with authors, faculty, researchers, reviewers, agents, and professional organizations.
Manage acquisitions from proposal through peer review, contract negotiation, and manuscript development.
Partner with editorial, production, marketing, sales, and design teams to publish and promote books.
Manage frontlist and backlist titles, including publishing plans, metadata updates, and portfolio performance.
Represent the publishing program at conferences, with stakeholders, and in other professional engagements.
Qualifications/Experience/Skills Include:
Bachelor’s Degree in a related field
3+ years experience in related field preferred
Knowledge of higher education space
Ability to work with authors
Ability to travel
Can hire either acquisitions editor or senior editor, depending on level of experience
